Gen 2's Little Brother - Dell XPS M140

Dell have decided to update their prestigious XPS line of notebooks with a budget offering, the M140. The flagship XPS M170 - or Gen 2 - is a gaming machine powered by a throbbing 2GHz Pentium M Processor, and the GeForce Go 6800 Ultra graphics card.

Dell's decision to tone down the XPS brand with a lower performance model, especially when the market is seemingly awash with discount Inspiron and Latitude notebooks, has left some industry watchers scratching their heads.

Tipping the scales at 5.9 pounds the Dell XPS M140 is no ultralight, but it's thin and light chassis is transportable. Under the arctic silver chassis purrs an Intel Pentium M 700 processor, certainly enough power for the average student, or small business user.

The M140 also sports an 80GB hard drive, and a crisp 14.1 inch widescreen WXGA LCD display. Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition comes as standard, you also get a stack of ports including 4 USB 2.0 ports, one S-Video Out, one IEE1394 port, one ExpressCard Slot, and one 5-1 flash memory card reader.

Performance wise, the Dell M140 notebook will be no match for it's gaming sibling the XPS Gen 2. However, when you see that prices start at $999, and consider the battery life of around 6 hours, plus enhanced technical support, it does offer value for money. A useful multimedia upgrade comes in the form of the external TV Tuner (optional) for a hundred and thirty dollars. We expect to see the XPS M140 shipping in november.
