Selling Out Fast? - Dell's XPS M1330

Dell's XPS M1330 Laptop
Dell has used its Direct2Dell blog-heralded as a "one-2-one communications" conduit with consumers and computerphiles-for something big. How big? To announce officially the Coming. That is, the arrival of the new XPS M1330. Much bandwidth has already been devoted to unofficial banter about this new Dell. But the Direct2Dell post settles some of the rumors out there and hopes to drive the interest even more.

So was this big Coming worthy of all the hype? One of the reasons that Dell set up its Direct2Dell blog was to be in touch with its public. So, you the public, be the judge.

Perhaps one of the most attractive features of the Vista-based Dell is its lower price as compared with past XPS models. The M1330 comes into the market starting at $1,299.

That price tag gets you the latest in Intel's Santa Rosa chipset, which stars the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 in this case-not to mention your money's worth in accoutrements, including an ExpressCard slot, a 2-megapixel webcam, 8-in-1 card reader, and media buttons across the laptop's chassis for mucho media control.

For memory, though, you're looking at 1GB, unless you drop another $200 at least, in which case you get 2GB. For another handful of hundreds-for a total of $1.754-you can then get a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M graphics card, instead of the standard Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100.

The M1330 is also the first Dell of its kind to feature the 13.3-inch WXGA LCD backlit display. This style display is brighter than most LCDs, and is thinner-the M1330 is less than an inch thin. And it sure is purrrty. The new Dell will come with Detroit-grade paint jobs-of pearl white, crimson or black.

So what do you think? If you need more feedback, several comments from outside readers are already posted on the Dell2Dell page. Roughly half seem impressed that Dell could produce such a machine, while the other half gripe in techie talk about what the M1330's lacking. One poor geezer called Damian was given a shipping date 2 months later than his order. On the plus side that must mean these XPS puppies are selling out fast.
