Rock Direct are based in the UK and have long been cranking out high end gaming machines for the delectation of the PC loving public. The latest X770 model does not disappoint. Boasting a 17-inch screen with pinpoint 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, an nVidia 8700M graphics chip and a core 2 duo processor, the Xtreme 770 can handle today's demanding DX10 games.

Rock Direct's X770Some mightcall the new Rock Xtreme 770 a desktop replacement for abudget-conscious gamer. But that description calls up all sortsof connotations, such as: anybody with the cash would rather getsomething more exotic like an Alienware. Or, how about: theXtreme 770 is not quite up to snuff as a desktop replacement;rather, it's a "cheap" desktop replacement.

But intruth, the X770 doesn't deserve those connotations. The laptopsets itself apart from other desktop replacement gaming laptopsout there, and not just because of its lower relative price. (Itstarts at about $ 2,450.) And not just as a gamer's notebook.

Case in point-the Xtreme 770 features a high-def DVD player and a17-inch LCD display with optional 1,920 x 1,200 resolution to getyour full 1080 pixels' worth. What does this mean for unpixelatedHD novices? Basically, it means this Rock can get as high def asyour eyes can perceive.

As a gaming machine, the Rock delivers the most powerful mobilegraphics chip, the nVidia 8700M GT. And the Xtreme's setup willallow you to upgrade to new drivers down the road to handle thelatest and hottest DX10 version games.

Either way, if you're tapping into the Rock for gaming or for HDvideos, the laptop has the hardware to power it. Besides theaforementioned graphics card, you have your choice of three Intel2 Duo processors-the T7300, the T7500, and the top end T7700-plusas much as 160GB of hard drive and 2GB of RAM.

At an all high-end configuration, the Rock comes to about$3,850.

The only downside to the X770 is, well, that's not so cheapanymore. That, and the less than extreme faux carbon chassiswhich an "X" emblazoned like a comic book superhero all over it.If you can get over the flashy looking exterior you could haveyourself one of the top HD desktop replacements outthere.
