Entertainment or Addiction?

Laptops can be used for many practical, yet somewhat tedious endeavours. Word processing, compiling spreadsheets etc (yawn). But what if your notebook could be used as a portal into the fantasy World of Warcraft, populated by fire breathing dragons, avaricious orcs, elegant elves and battle hardened dwarves?

World of Warcraft is a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) set in the incredibly detailed world of Azeroth. WoW allows players from across the globe to meet online and undertake quests for glory and gold. World of Warcraft offers eight playable races, split between two factions: the Horde and the Alliance. The Alliance consists of Dwarves, Gnomes, Humans, and Night Elves. The Horde boasts Orcs, Tauren, and Trolls amongst it's ranks. Granted a few character cliches are present, but thank goodness no plump, pipe smoking hobbits or halflings.

Once a race is selected a player must decide what kind of hero he/she wishes to guide safely through adventures in Azeroth. Classes include - Hunter, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, and Warrior to name a few. Each class gives the player access to different skills and spells. Character choice can determine greatly what kind of strategy to adopt in World of Warcraft.

The Warcraft MMORPG was launched in 2004 by Blizzard entertainment, famous for sci-fi strategy computer game Starcraft. World of Warcraft has won many illustrious "Editor's Choice" and "Game of the Year" awards from notables such as Apple, Gamespot, Gamespy, IGN, ActionTrip, and Game Revolution.

Since November 2004, World of Warcraft has attracted over four million subscribers worldwide, over a million of these sword and sorcery afficianados are in the United States. However, it isn't just Uncle Sam slaying goblins with his trusty BoneBiter. Our Chinese chums are also signing up to kick kobold ass in droves. Indeed, Blizzard recently released WoW in China, and the online strategy managed to pull in a staggering 1.5 million paying customers in its first month, making it the world's most popular online fantasy MMORPG.

It sounds a lot of fun right? Well there are many happy players around the world, but also a growing number of gamers who are finding the game to be disturbingly addictive. Some gamers are reporting sessions of 16 hours plus. Broken relationships with wives, girlfriends, family and colleagues have been reported allegedly due to excessive WOW involvement.
