Sleek Meets Geek: VGN-N130G Sony VAIO N Series |
![]() |
We have always been a big proponent of multimedia friendly Sony VAIO laptops. If we ever strike it big, the first thing we'd do is run out and by us up a high-end VAIO to feel important with. But now Sony has made it possible to feel important without having to hit the jackpot first-ah, the American dream! We can buy an entry level Sony VAIO N Series for about only one grand, and we can even have it in coffee-table brown. |
|
We've seen
pink
notebooks before, but these new VAIOs will come in "wenge" brown,
a laptop color intended to match the finish of most wood furniture. That's what
happens when you allow geeks to go heavy on the design :) You get
the N Series-laptops meant to blend with home décor.
Besides the wenge, Sony also is releasing a white and a standard
black N Series-all to pique the "culturally creative" tastes of
the individual consumer, so the p.r. people say. But as we said before, it's still a VAIO, so we can forgive the Sony people their excesses. They offer an Intel Core Duo on some packages, brown, black, or white. Indeed the VGN-N130G comes with a 1.6 GHz processor, 80GB hard drive, and 1 GB of DDR RAM upgradeable to 2GB. You also get the XBRITE-ECO Sony super-clarity technology on the 15.4-inch widescreen LCD (1280 by 800 resolution), so your view on the inside will look as good as on the outside of the laptop. The VGN-N130G N Series also provides some multimedia panache, with a DVD burner and DVgate Plus software, which will allow you to customize and edit your DVD content. And access to cameras and other media devices ain't but a USB, ExpressCard, i.Link, or Memory Stick slot away. And at that price, I could buy a stylish wenge N Series VAIO for my earthy-toned living room, a black one for my noir bedroom, and a white one for my clean, shiny bathroom. When I strike it rich. But watch that weight! The VGN-N130G weighs in at almost 7 pounds, which is fine if it's parked on your DukeWood writing desk. Over your shoulder during rush hour, that could be a burden if you're used to carrying ultraportables around. Another thing to watch out for if you're a gamer is the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950 from Intel. That's right no seperate graphics card, probably only a deal breaker if you're a 3D gaming enthusiast. By Matthew Brodsky - Laptopical Friday, September 22, 2006 |
