As an adult, I still come to grips with the notion that things exist in this world that I might never attain: a Ferrari, a supermodel, the CEO position at a Fortune 500 corporation. Should I add the Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E? With a price tag of $3K plus, this new Sony could have me choosing between it and saving for my retirement. Even if I could afford to buy it, I don't know if I could rationalize paying that much for a desktop replacement. However, it wouldn't take much to convince me otherwise--probably just one look at a Blu-ray playing on its display. This Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E is a multimedia marvel, complete with all the new toys. It can play hi-def Blu-ray discs on its 1920 x 1200, 17-inch display-with 1080-pixel potential and XBrite HiColor high-glean capabilities. Or you can transfer the signal to an outside HD monitor with a HDMI cable.

More amazing, the Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E contains the Ulead BD DiscRecorder software, which allows you to burn onto these Blu-rays, say, if you've downloaded your high-def camcorder footage onto your laptop.

Multimedia means gaming capabilities too. The Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E delivers there, too, with a top-notch Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card, combined with a 2-GHz T7300 Intel Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM.

For all that HD footage that you'll need to store on the hard drive, downloaded games, photos, MP3s, and what not, you should have more than enough room with 320GB of space.

In fact, the only complaint I've heard so far about the Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E is the size and location of its mouse components. Oh, and the fact that its black chassis is so shiny and exquisite that fingerprints leave unpardonable smudges. Just wear your white silk gloves when you use it. What's such a small expense after you've dropped more than three grand.
