Ubuntu Hardy Heron up for Grabs |
Hardy Heron is clearly an attempt to bring Linux to the masses; it’s easier than ever to install and use, alongside Windows on a virtual partition or as the primary OS. If you want to get acquainted with the operating system without installing it, you can even run it straight off the CD in demo mode. The new OS appears to be very stable and admittedly, it looks great, especially with the “compiz fusion” add-on, which adds some funky 3D effects to the desktop environment. Another important aspect is that it comes with a full range of free software. Some of the notable new additions are Open Office 2.4, with support for the latest Microsoft Office formats, the latest Firefox 3 web browser (beta 5), and improved security features including a new firewall. Certain laptops from Dell, namely two Inspiron models and one XPS, are already available with a preinstalled copy of Ubuntu Linux instead of Windows. It will almost certainly appear in laptops from other manufacturers as well, especially in budget models. By Jesper Carlson - Laptopical Friday, April 26, 2008 |
