We adore ultraportables here at Laptopical, and it seems Sony have pulled out a juicy ultralight plum from the PC pie, with the unveiling of the Vaio TX2 series. It will probably begin shipping at the end of february, and has an impressive battery life of 7+ hours.

Image of Sony Tx2 Vaio notebookThe SonyVAIO TX2 might be best in breed for those ultra-thin laptops thathave become popular with busy business folks and other people whoput the mobility in "mobile computers." Then again, this new VAIOseries may be an entirely new breed of laptop. At less than an inch thick and little more than 2.5 pounds, the laptop packs thecomputing power to nearly match a desktop replacementmodel.
In fact, the Sony Vaio TX series is the only "subnotebook" around with two spindlesand an integrated optical drive. Back that up with an IntelPentium M Centrino processor, and you have a little laptop that can go a long way. Not justfiguratively, either-Centrino mobile technology helps the batteryto last from New York to London and beyond-up to 7.5 hours.

Other hardware on this VAIO is built to impress as well. The optical drive mentioned earlier is aSuper Multi Double Layer DVD with read-write capabilities. Thedouble layering allows you to record as much as four hours more. Then play back your stored media to enjoy the 11.1-inchwidescreen display with LED (the first laptop of its kind withthis) and Sony's X-black LCD for brightness and vivid colors.

Then enjoy the finer touches that Sony added to the TX2 series. There's an Automatic Luminance Sensor, which automaticallycontrols the screen brightness depending on the setting, and awireless mouse. Can't forget the spiffy, carbon fiber and composite exterior either, which comes in black, white, and slate blue.

The finished product-you have an ultra-thin Vaio withbrawn and beauty. A release date has yet to beannounced, but expect these ultraportables to fly off the shelves in 2006, especially if they upgrade the Pentium M processor to a Yonah.
