TuxMobil's Survey Turns Heads

Two big announcements have come out of TuxMobil recently. Both symbolize just how popular Linux is becoming with users of laptops and portable computing devices.

The first was the premier Linux Web site's announcement that its Linux notebook Survey has topped the 4,000 reports level. Since this February alone, the penguin-friendly site has received more than 1,000.

This success can be linked to how compatible Linux and other Unix-based operating systems are with most laptops. Sure, some notebook manufacturers have hardware, such as suspend-to-RAM, internal modems, and internal card readers, that the manufacturers haven't put much effort into making Linux compatible. But for the most part, it works well.

Plus, with many reports on TuxMobil, contributors also share how to make these hardware components compatible, as well as lists for almost all other laptops and components that are compatible. TuxMobil also features tips for Linux software and drivers.

Now on to the second big announcement: the winners of the TuxMobil GNU/Linux Awards 2005. Judges Georg C. F. Greve from the Free Software Foundation Europe, Joerg Luther, the LinuxUser Editor-in-Chief, and Werner W. Hauser of, where else, TuxMobil, honored five free software projects that are making it easier for mobile computer users to tap into Linux.

The awards-drumroll please-went to:

- OpenEmbedded[5]: SHARP SL-6000L Linux PDA

- OpenZaurus[6]: SHARP SL-C750 Linux PDA

- KDE-Pim/PI (PI-Sync)[7]: AnyCom GS-320 TriBand GSM/GPRS CF-Card

- KWlanInfo[8]: Conceptronic 54Mbps Adapter, D-Link DWL-122 Adapter

- BlueZ[9]: Serialio LaserChamp cordless Bluetooth scanner
