Rugged - Panasonic's Toughbook CF-29 |
![]() |
Panasonic's latest Toughbook sure is rugged. It might even be tough enough for James Bond, the Dynamic Duo and Dirty Harry's mother-in-law, as well as other crime fighters-those public and those with secret identities-who need a laptop that can take a thumping and keep on bumping. The new Toughbook CF-29 is also the first of its kind with integrated Cingular UMTS/HSDPA 3G BroadbandConnect wireless service. |

What's that
mean to us, Joe. Q. Public of the metropolis? That means that the
good guys can spy on the bad guys-by browsing through criminal
databases and other top-secret sites-when cruising in their
patrol cars, or when on missions deep behind enemy lines. The BroadbandConnect network is the next-generation Global System for Mobile Communication, or GSM. It's available in more than 60 cities, and where it's not available, the crime fighters using the CF-29 can tap into the high-speed EDGE network, which can be accessed in 13,000 cities in the United States alone. For those international agents, the Pansonic's wireless capabilities will be able to work in at least 100 countries worldwide. And we're talking wireless that's as rapid-fire as an M-16 with the safety off. Speeds can crank at a steady 400 to 700 kilobits per second, and can blast off bursts at times of up to one megabit per second. And all of this capability comes in a rugged magnesium alloy chassis that's built like an Abrams tank. You can't have a name like Toughbook and not back it up. So the CF-29 will make a great partner for tough guys and gals in the "public service" biz. Powering this steel trap of a notebook is an Intel Centrino chipset. Ok that's a long way off the multitasking power of a core duo processor, but the Toughbook 29 is not aimed at gaming and multimedia users, but for those looking for laptop longevity and performance under harsh conditions. The Toughbook CF 29 also comes with a 13.3inch touchscreen display (1024 by 768 resolution), an 80 GB Shock-mounted removable hard drive in stainless steel case, and sealed port and connector covers. For the truly sophisticated agent, the CF-29 can also be fitted with optional BlueTooth and GPS technologies. By Matthew Brodsky - Laptopical Friday, August 18, 2006 |
