Travelling With Tiny Laptops - 5 of the Best

It's the time of year when people converge on airports like herds of stampeding water buffalo, seeking that holiday abroad to recharge the batteries and spend quality time with friends or family. It could be argued that bringing a laptop on vacation defeats the purpose of a recovery period, so unless you have an urgent project to complete it's best to leave it at home. However if you really must have a portable pal along with you forget bringing a desktop replacement. Carrying 7-10 lbs of hardware along with clothing, toiletries and the inevitable souvenirs is tiring - instead go tiny. Here are 5 mini laptops that will fit snugly in a case or backback and won't put your shoulder out of joint.

Sony TX Vaio
The Sony VAIO VGN-TXN27N is less than 1 inch thick and weighs 2.84 lbs which is under 1.3KG. This tiny Vaio is recommended by adventurer Timothy Ferris, who can squeeze 15 hours of battery life out of this puppy with an extended battery pack. Until laptop fuel cells are released on the market that's about as good as it gets. It's powered by an intel core solo processor, has an 11.1 inch screen with an anti-reflective coating to make viewing easier in bright sunlight.
Fujitsu Q2010 Lifebook
With it's piano lacquer finish this Q2010 Lifebook is arguably the most attractive of the 5 wee ones on our mini laptop list. It weighs just 1 kg, is 18 mm thick and has a form factor the size of a sheet of A4 paper. A 12.1 inch wide-screen display is easy on the eyes and an integrated fingerprint reader adds an extra layer of security.

If anyone kicks sand in your face while you are relaxing on Bondi beach, at least you don't have to worry about damage to this laptop. It has been awarded an IP-54 rating for dust and humidity, making it suitable for use in enviroments far harsher than those encountered on the Italian Riviera. Tipping the scales at less than 1KG, with a miniscule footprint of 4.3 by 6 inches, the Gobook's display is the smallest of this bunch, just 5.6 inches wide.

This is the big boy of our 5 tiny notebooks weighing in at a relatively beefy 1.7KG. You get a hard drive of up to 160 GB, a powerful dual-core 64-bit processor and a 12.1" screen. This Ferrari 1000 notebook is compatible with Acer's ezDock, which is an interface that supports 24 ports to connect external keyboard, monitor, printer etc
Small Flybook laptop
This small notebook is only 9.25 x 6.1 x 1.22 inches in size, and tips the scales at 1.2KG. The screen is 8.9 inches and a swivel hinge opening clasp allows a user to operate the laptop like a a tablet pc. The heartbeat of the ultraportable Flybook is a Transmeta Crusoe 1GHz processor, you also get a 40GB hard drive.
