Think a Website is Invading Your Privacy? Tell the FTC!

Ever wish there was a "mark as spam" button for the internet? Next time you typo your way into a bad site that attempts to steal your data, or simply go to a slimy legitimate site that's just pretending not to invade, complain about it. Straight to the FTC. With this easy to use new tool from the Center for Democracy and Technology.

The tool, which is remarkably easy to set up, allows a user to submit the name of the website, the type of complaint, and their personal story of how they were invaded. You can then share your complaint on social media sites and directly forward it to the Federal Trade Commission.

Think you're pretty secure? Allow us to quote the most interesting factoids we read that can assure you you're probably not as safe from this kind of stuff as you think you are.

"The United States lacks a comprehensive federal law protecting consumer privacy."
"Even if you delete cookies, your browsing history, and your browser cache from your Web browser, many Web sites can still track you through “flash cookies” they have placed elsewhere on your computer."
"In August 2006, AOL publicly released “anonymized” log files containing twenty million search queries for over 650,000 users over a 3-month period; the data included a unique identifier for each user but did not include anything that would traditionally have been considered "Personally Identifiable Information" Nevertheless, several researchers were easily able to identify individuals based on these "anonymous" records."

If that's enough to stir you to join the cause, then head on over to CDT's Take Back Your Privacy site and check out their bookmarking tool, and if you're really feeling up to it, I'm sure they'd love you to read up and join their overall campaign. The bookmarking tool is really easy to set up - you literally drag and drop a button to your favorites toolbar of choice, that's all. Then just click and send. The only things that are a little annoying about it are that you don't seem to be able to close the complaint tool once you've opened it (without closing the whole tab) and, for legitimacy reasons, you are required to submit your name.

Cool idea... maybe with a few million users, it could make a difference?
