Acer hasn't released a new eMachine laptop in a long time, but with the booming popularity of netbooks it has launched itself back into the fray.

Acer has released the eMD620-5777, a low cost, low performance notebook which appears to be designed to compete with netbooks. The eMD620-5777 has a 14.1" wide screen display as well as a DVD burner, making it seem like it's a regular laptop until you hear that the price is only $429. To compensate, the machine comes packed with AMD's 1.6GHz Athlon 2650e - a low power processor for small PCs, along with a single GB of RAM, so we can expect the battery life and performance of the unit to be meager. But as far as surfing the web, doing word processing and watching videos go, it will probably do fine. It also comes with ATI Radeon x1200 graphics, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a 160GB HDD and 3 USB ports. It's loaded with Vista too. The eMD620-5777 will be at Best Buy beginning November 1st. Via crave

not a bad laptop, but the customer service is truly horrendous. The lcd screen stopped working on mine after 10 months. I could not find a phone number anywhere to call an actual live person for tech support and had to result the their online chat. upon giving them the serial number the first thing I was told, was that it was out of warranty and I could pay to have it repaired. even though I had the receipt in front of me proving it still had 2 months left on the warranty. Dealing with the support drone on the other end of the chat was sheer torture. English must have been his third or fourth language. His language was so bad I swore I was taking the turing test, and it was failing. after trying to get some help he disconnected on me.

After that I turned to email in my next vain help to get them to acknowledge that the warranty was still valid. After 4 days, being denied 6 times and told off once, I managed to get through and was able to send them a scanned copy of the receipt. After that the said it was under warranty. Then they had me jump through many hoops and questions to see if they could find another way to invalidate me.

After they found no other way, they told me to courier it to them(since they don't allow the use of the post office) at my expense, and sent me a 4 page list of very specific packaging instructions to follow or it wouldn't be covered. I managed to comply with these too and now have to wait and see if they can find another way to screw me.

They really do have the worlds very worst repair service.

We recently purchased an Acer EMachine laptop for my son for Christmas. We purchased the machine on Black Friday at Walmart for $199. Well Christmas came and my son opened his gift from Santa and found that the screen was cracked. The seal on the box was not opened until Christmas. He was devastated but we called Acer to see what we needed to do to get this repaired under warranty. To my surprise, Acer's customer service informed us since it appears to be a consumer damage that it voids the warranty and if we wanted it fixed, we need to pay $199 to get it repaired. I spoke to 2 service representatives (who did not speak English that well so I am assuming it is not a US call center they are using) who stated the same response - consumer damage warranty not valid. I requested to speak to a supervisor and was given the floor supervisor. He also stated that since it was consumer damage, I would need to pay for it. I was informed by one of the customer service reps that I would need to speak to the 2nd level department regarding the repair on Monday since they were not in on the 26th. We called Monday to be told there is not a 2nd level department and again that since it was consumer damage, we would need to pay for repair. We were quite surprised to learn that this company is not consumer friendly. We did however go to Walmart to explain all this and the Walmart Supervisor worked wonders. They are returning the product to Acer to get it repaired. Walmart is paying to have it shipped back to Acer in Texas but when we had to give Acer our address, the customer service representative again had to add that it was consumer damage although the Walmart Supervisor and the Acer customer service representative already agreed that it was not in fact consumer damage. Do not buy Acer products - They do not stand by their product nor do they do a thing to make the consumer happy. I will continue to inform family/friends all do not do it - You pay for what you get - Pay a low price for a laptop and look what happens - you get crappy customer service and crappy service from a company.

I love this laptop. I am currently using it. It is wonderful. It comes with Vista Basic. It is extremely fast with 160 GB hard drive and 2 GB of RAM. WiFi, DVD burner, fast battery recharge. about 2-3 hours of battery. Doesn't get that hot. I have the Emachine D620
