Apple has recently announced that the upcoming Macworld Expo in January 2009 will be the last for the company. What's more, they have informed us that Mac icon Steve Jobs will not even be giving the farewell keynote address - that job falls on the shoulders of Apple's senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller. No more Macworld? No more Steve Jobs? What's going on here?

"Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers," the company said in a statement posted to its website. "The increasing popularity of Apple's Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways."

There will be some who say they saw it coming. Quotes such as this one only emphasize the fact that Apple has been pulling out of trade shows and expos for years. And there has been rampant speculation about the health of Steve Jobs and his future with Apple. So, yes, maybe you were smart enough to put everything together and predict this. To all of us who were expecting wonderful, magical new Steve Jobs Mac Announcements to come out every January for years to come, this hurts.

The silver lining? Paul Kent of IDG, the company that runs MacWorld Expo, was quoted as saying: "We're committed to serving their [the Mac community's] interests at Moscone Center January 4-8, 2010".
