The New Toshiba Tecra S3 Notebook

OK so this business class laptop from the chaps at Toshiba doesn't have a dual core processor, but it does have a built in fingerprint reader, TPM security chip, respectable battery life, and robust wireless connectivity.

Evenbig-shot business people are kids at heart-at least the guysamong them. With all their talk about teleconferencing,million-miles-a-year travel itineraries, and data security,businessmen also like their toys. Toshiba's Tecra S3 makes itpossible for them to have both.

It comes with everything that a traveling corporate hustlercould want. It's not that light on the shoulder though, weighingin at a solid 6.3 pounds, and it may be a little unwieldy in itsbulky case. Still it has excellent wireless capabilities, and its1.73-GHz Pentium M 740 is more than adequate as a processor.Plus, you can get above 3 hours of juice out of its battery, evenwith Wi-Fi at full tilt. And as for the IT catchword of theday-security-the Tecra S3 comes with a TPM security chip and a fingerprint reader.

The Tecra S3is also fairly configurable to suit your hardware tastes, withoptions of 256MB of memory base or an upgrade to 512MB. Storagestarts at 40GB hard drive, with 60GB and 80GB possible too. Thestandard DVD-ROM, CD read-write drive can be replaced with adouble-layer DVD burner. And as for displays, the standard is a15-inch XGA-resolution screen that can be tossed for one with thetighter, brighter SXGA+ resolution. All of these upgrades areavailable for less than $100 each, with the base ToshibaTecra S3 running a little more than $1,500.

Now that there's enough to convince a manager to shell out thecash for an S3, we can divulge what would make the Toshiba TecraS3 fun for you. It's got a 64MB Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 GPU, whichmakes it adequate for gaming on those long red-eye flights or ina lonely hotel room at night.
