No this article isn't a homage to Hanna Barbera's fictional cartoon bear, but a post about a Linux security gadget created by an Israeli company. Image of the Yoggie Gatekeeper gadgetAccording to Israel based company Yoggie, a tiny computer the size of a credit card is set to take laptop security to the next level. The Yoggie Gatekeeper gadget runs a Linux operating system and protects laptops running Windows XP from phishers, spyware and viruses at wireless hotspots and other public wi-fi networks, such as those found in libraries and hotels. The idea behind this device is to provide road warriors and other business users the same level of stringent security enjoyed within the corporate world.
Yoggie's hardened Linux operating system works by isolating the notebook from incoming web threats. The Yoggie Gatekeeper is not installed on the laptop, but acts as a hardware firewall between the internet and your notebook, allowing it to protect you from unknown attacks, dropping access as they are identified. If for any reason, the attack is successful, Yoggie's security device is the first line of defence, and takes the web assault squarely on the chin. It will not allow phishers, data hackers and other ne'er do wells easy access to your notebook pc.

Yoggie's tiny security processor is solely dedicated to your laptop's security and packs the punch of a Pentium III processor. The gadget also includes two separate Flash memory chips. One of these hosts a copy of the Linux operating system. During pre boot, the Gatekeeper device transfers the operating system onto the 2nd chip, and uses it during operation. The first copy of the Yoggie OS, stored on the other flash memory chip, doesn't allow any "Write Access" permissions. This two-fold process, ensures that if a successful spyware or virus attack does happen, upon rebooting a clean and safe version of the software is available.
