Momentus - Alienware Selects Seagate

Alienware, always known for its out-of-the-mainstream quality and gaming notebooks, may not surprise anybody with its most recent announcement: it has selected Seagate Technology hard drives for its next-generation Sentia laptops, bumping up their storage capabilities to 240 GB.

The Seagate hard drives in question are the Momentus 5400.2-a 120 GB model-and the Momentus 7200.1-either 100 GB or 80 GB. The 240 GB potential-or 200 GB- obviously comes from the fact that Alienware users can beam up an additional 2.5-inch drive, for storage capabilities (at RAID 0) or for data protection (RAID 1). These configurations will be available on the Alienware MJ-12 m7700 workstation and Area-51 m7700 mobile desktop, as well as the Sentia Notebooks.

Why did Alienware decide to have a close encounter with Seagate? Seagate will tell you its because of its hard drive's shock tolerance and power efficiency, not to mention its overall quality of product and output.

Size matters, too. Seagate was the first to ship a 120 GB 5400 RPM notebook hard drive. It is one of a few, if the only one, to move a 100 GB 7200 RPM laptop drive en masse. And it's the first manufacturer to unveil a 2.5-inch notebook designed to bring to bear 160 GB of capacity with perpendicular recording technology.

What does all that mean? You probably will not need to phone home for more storage with a Seagate hard drive. And you probably won't need to sweat security as much, as well. The Momentus drive has built-in technology that can keep unwanted users from accessing your data.
