Sager Nips Perfection in the Bud with the 9880The 9880 is the latest gaming box of delights from top-of-the-line laptop manufacturer Sager. The NP9880 is a multimedia powerhouse, with video and audio at a premium, and Windows Media Center and a camera for the full enchilada. The 9880 Sager comes with the brain and the heart to power such features. It has configurable RAM memory-four open slots for an optimal four 512MB memory sticks. The hard drive leaves lots of options, too, with either PATA or SATA configurations, for 60GB or 80GB respectively. The drives can also be set as RAID 0, which means you have two 60GB drives working double-time as 120GB; or they can be set as RAID 1, which allows one drive to back-up the other against physical failure. Then there's the Sager's power pack to provide life to this Frankenstein array of memory and storage. The notebook comes with an Intel Pentium 4, with four options from 3.0GHz to 3.8GHz. As for a chipset, it's an Intel 915P. The only downside to this chipset is that it limits your memory. Remember those four memory slots? If you were load them to bear with four 512MB sticks, the laptop will recognize only 2.8GB of memory. (Intel, however, blames the operating system for this glitch.) Perhaps some of the Sager NP9880's finest features are the "multi" in its media, starting with its screen, a 17-inch display available in both WSXGA and WUXGA. Both are great options for resolution, though the WSXGA may have the edge if you're being picky. To go with that vivid display are some of the best speakers on the market. This gaming laptop comes standard with four speakers and a subwoofer, which will surprise you with their rich, full sound. If they don't cut-you must be a true audiophile!-then plug the notebook into its available external eight-channel sound system. Then turn on the front-panel DJ, which allows you to play CDs and MP3s without even booting up Windows. It's a nice feature, especially if you're trying to skimp on battery power. It's just one more example of the finer things that make Sagers solid gaming notebooks, worth the big bucks. By Matthew Brodsky Wednesday, August 31, 2005 |
