Some laptops by luxury designers adorn their frames with gold and jewels to entice you to spend more than the traditional couple thousand on a premium laptop. The Sager NP9280 simply decided to glue together nearly 12lbs of the most ultimate performance hardware you'll find in a laptop - and that includes an Intel Core i7. Pardon us while we wipe the drool from our chin.

The Sager NP9280 truly pushes the limit of what constitutes "portability," which is theoretically a requirement in any laptop. It brings back memories of the lap crushing HP Dragon. The NP9280 has 17.1" display that boasts dimensions of 15.5" x 11.75" x 2.35" - yes, 2.35 inches thick. But then again, how else would you have room for the cacophony of ports generously littered on all sides?

Let's get technical - if you're willing to pay top dollar, you can get the 3.33GHz Intel Core i7-975 Processor Extreme Edition, with an 8MB L3 Cache. You can get 12GB Triple Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz, and up to 3x 160GB Intel SATA2 SSDs. As for graphics, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 is standard. Other goodies like Blu-ray, TV-tuner, etc, are also available.

Sager 9280 Ports

On every NP9280 you'll find a 1920x1200 resolution, 4 speakers, 4 USB ports and 1 FireWire, eSATA, HDMI and DVI, programmable gaming buttons and a 3.0MP integrated webcam. There is also a 12-cell battery which we imagine last as many minutes as we have fingers and toes when running at anywhere near max capacity. Prices start under $2000, but if you want all the glory a laptop can muster, be prepared to shell out $7000.

Out of curiosity - we know it looks cool, but we understand skepticism here - how many of you out there think it'd be worth it to get this kind of muscle in an 11.55lb laptop, and how many of you would just opt for the desktop instead?

I would love to get this machine, actually it's on order right now. I'm into programming and I'm a pretty heavy gamer, and I hate the lack of mobility of a desktop. This machine beats any desktops I've seen in my country by a huge margin. I've only opted for the core i7-950 (3.06GHz) and 6GB DDR3 1066MHz of ram, to save on costs as in my country the system came up to about 18,000 when converting the price. I'd prefer shelling out for this rather than a desktop as I constantly move around (be it friends houses, school, work, anime conventions, you name it) and I'd rather keep all my information, work, school and personal, as well as all my games and gadgets, plus my videos and the like in one place. Rather than rely on a desktop for power, if I can get the desktop's power in my laptop then what complaints could I have? Even if it's heavy for a portable machine, it's still portable, it's FAR easier to carry around than a 40 pound desktop + monitor + mouse + keyboard + speakers, and takes up lots less space too. I'd just use a backpack with it for carrying. I also opted for 1TB of storage (2x500GB 7200 RPM) in Raid-0 format rather than the more expensive and smaller SSDs. To me, an SSD is a nice idea. It's fast, it has good data protection in terms of shock resistance etc. But it's far smaller and it is far too expensive. I'm not paying extra for a little burst of speed in read/write functions. I need space. I think rather than advertise 3x160GB SSDs, you should advertise the 1.5TB 3x500GB 7200 RPM HDDs. People like me need space. I could fill 2 TB in one weekend, just give me 1Gb ethernet bandwidth and my favourite torrent site. Anime and games to last the whole year through! Also the configuration I selected only costs 3004 if buying directly from Sager, 3084 if buying Vista Ultimate instead of Home Premium. A lot less than your aforementioned $7000 price tag
