Overview of the HP Pavilion dv2000t

Hewlett Packard's Dv2000t Pavilion
Core Duo-based laptops are everywhere these days, so they aren't quite the next big thing anymore. They're the current big thing. The next big thing now is the Core 2 Duo processor. But until Merom becomes cheaper and more accessible in laptops, then you, the buyer, have the task of finding a a core duo notebook with the most bells and whistles to set it apart from the other dual-core machines. That could be the new HP Pavilion dv2000t.
For under a $1000 you can get a 1.8 GHz Core Duo T2400 processor with 1GB of RAM, expandable to 2GB, and 100 GB of hard drive space, but as I implied before, if you're paying a grand plus and you're NOT getting that, you'd be getting taken for a monkey's uncle in this market.

What the HP Pavilion dv2000t brings that other similar laptops don't have, though, is a pinstriped Matrix-mod black chassis, a one of a kind design that makes the adjective "sleek" a cliché.

You get HP-exclusive technology such as QuickPlay, which allows you to load MP3s and DVDs onto the notebook without having to boot up Windows. And you can do so from your couch while your laptop rests on your desk 10 feet away, thanks to the remote control (optional).

Then you get the BrightView high-gloss technology on the 14.1-inch display. It ain't quite as good as watching a DVD on the 46-inch DLP projection TV in my den, but it can't be beat while watching a movie on a 5-hour redeye, or the back row of your Econ 101 lecture.

The list of features goes on too: from the LightScribe DVD disc labeling technology, the two headphone jacks in the front of the laptop, multimedia keys on the keyboard to control DVD playing, the 1.3-megapixel Webcam, to the DVD burner.

Some would argue that the HP dv2000t has some holes for its price, like no PC Card slot or a high-powered graphics card. But you can always upgrade to a 128 MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7200 if gaming is your thing. And there is an ExpressCard slot instead of a PC Card, though the PC Card slot is more accessible by peripherals. It's something to consider, but not enough to bring you down on this Pavilion.

If you really want to go to town, and pack this 1 inch thick, 5.3 pound HP laptop with a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor (T7200), 120GB hard drive, and 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, expect to pay at least $1300.
