Top Secret Notebook - Lost or Stolen?

A San Diego news station (10 news) reported yesterday that a top secret laptop computer has gone missing at the Imperial Beach Border Patrol station. The situation is supposedly under investigation by the U.S. Border Patrol and naval intelligence, with the primary question being: just how did the laptop vanish?

This case of hide and go seek is no game. Fabricated by a secret San Diego-based military contractor known as SPAWAR (Space and Naval Warfare Systems), the lost device may be of vital importance to U.S. national security. It contains a surveillance application that allows Border Patrol agents to monitor video feed from remote locations.

In a published response to the news report, the Border Patrol attempted to allay fears by stating that "it is highly unlikely" that the missing laptop would threaten U.S. national security. The laptop contained only a basic operating system and a prototype of the video software. Furthermore, the notebook was not linked to computer systems at the Department of Homeland Security, and was fitted with several safeguards intended to prevent outside access.

Border surveillance is an enormous concern for national security experts. Both borders with Mexico and Canada are expansive, as are the U.S. coasts. This event also highlights the frightening factor that human error could play in national security failures, and the need to devise a contingency to safeguard against such scenarios.
