The Penguin passes 3000 - Tuxmobil Uploads Milestone Linux Installation Report

TuxMobil.org, one of the top ten laptop sites in the world, has recorded the 3000th Linux installation report in its "TuxMobil Linux Laptop and Notebook Survey." It's a huge milestone for the Linux community, as well as an indication of the wealth of information and support out there for Tux fans.

The survey at TuxMobil provides installation aid for specific laptop models and manufacturers. Users first select their particular notebook maker from the AZ index. Then they choose from a list of that manufacturer's available models, which pops up on the next page. This list also contains links for particular drivers used by a model, such as touchpad or Wireless LAN.

Supplied by avid Linux community members, the TuxMobil survey contains installation reports for laptops from a distant age, along with the newest of the new. The survey houses reports, for instance, for laptops with an old-fashioned 80286 CPU or cutting-edge Pentium-M and AMD64 CPUs. In fact, Linux aficionados are sure to find installation reports for nearly all Linux distributions.

The survey's success is a long way from the uncertain future that Linux faced a decade ago, when creator Linus Torvalds first released the Linux Kernel version 1.0 in 1994. So-called technology experts, journalists, and pundits derided it as a mere hobby for geeks in their garages. They denied the operating system any role beyond this niche market, proclaiming that Linux did not have the versatility or power for the personal or public computing scene.

Since then, Linux and its GNU General Public License source code have proven all opponents wrong. Hundreds of organizations and individuals have created Linux-based operating systems. Program developers have launched a broad array of Linux-based applications, such as the Mozilla Web browser and the OpenOffice office suite. Even the titans of the corporate computing world - namely, IBM and HP - have thrown their support behind Linux.

Linux has become a worldwide phenomenon as a server platform and as desktop operating system. So one can hardly expect it to peak at 3000 TuxMobil installation reports. Tux the penguin will surely continue to waddle his way toward bigger and better things.
