Microsoft Courier to be ultraportable 'digital journal'

The latest tidbit about Microsoft's Courier device is that it is going to function as an extremely portable, lightweight 'digital journal' of sorts. Users can expect it to be centered around drawing, writing, and e-reading. Based on the look of these pictures, Courier looks pretty slick.

Last time I talked about Courier, I was shaking my head that Microsoft didn't see fit to take the fizzle out of the iPad announcement by debuting it first. The initial details gathered by Gizmodo in September were quite intriguing, and it looked like a genuinely new and innovative take on the tablet. The HP Slate that MS announced instead, while it should do everything you'd expect from a nice new touchscreen tablet, is just that - what you'd expect. Courier was new. With tablet buzz at an all time high, appetite was never greater for Courier details than in January.

Well, patience is a virtue, and new information has finally come to light. According to Engadget, the new Courier tablet will be a bit smaller than anticipated - when folded, it's hardly the size of a 5x7 photo. It is also just over a pound heavy and under an inch thick, so we're talking portable here. I'm glad to see the folding screen, a central part of what makes this a more innovative tablet, remains intact in this update - I would have been disappointed if Microsoft gave up such an interesting concept. Personally, I see this as a great benefit for an e-Reader - it'd be the first one you can actually hold the same way you'd hold a book - and MS will indeed be using is as their primary eReader. There will also be a camera and microphone (take that iPad), and a lot of pen-heavy features.

Availability is supposedly something like "Q3/Q4," so this is still too preliminary to get one's hopes up too high. However, it's a much sought after update and the first in months, so I'm certainly happy. If this comes out in the fall at or under the price bar set by Apple, I'd have to think it'll do pretty well.

    So, why should you buy the Dell Mini instead of one of the other myriad netbooks out there with the exact same specs? For one thing the starting price is very low, just $249, but that gets you a mere 4GB SSD, so most potential buyers will probably add a few bucks for more storage space.
