MHX2300BT - Fujitsu's 300GB 2.5 Inch Hard Drive |
![]() |
December 2006 could go down as a major moment in the timeline of laptop technology. It is when Fujitsu, the Japan-based manufacturer of laptops and other IT and communications equipment, announced that it had created a revolutionary hard drive - a 300 GB 2.5-inch SATA hard drive, codenamed MHX2300BT, due out in February 2007. The coming year might even go down in history as the "Year of MHX2300BT." |

OK, that
doesn't have a good ring to it, but we're not marketing the
MHX2300BT here at Laptopical. We're just writing about it.
Fujitsu
probably forks out a lot of good money on its own marketing, so they
don't need us coming up with slogans for them. But I digress. New years are all about resolutions, and the MHX2300BT must represent a serious resolution on the part of Fujitsu to conquer the hard drive world. The 2.5-inch 300 GB hard drive could eclipse the 3.5-inch hard drives used now in most desktop computers, according to Fujitsu. The new 300 GB monsters will house the most storage space of any 2.5-inch hard drive to date. And the MHX2300BT is also small enough to squeeze into even the most ultra ultraportable laptop, as well as in flat-panel TVs and built-in recorders. Smaller, bigger and quieter all at the same time. Quite a coup. The secret to the new hard drive's success is that it uses perpendicular magnetic recording, a technology with a proven track record. Fujitsu released the MHV2100AH 100GB hard drive in december 2004, the MHV2120AT 120GB drive in march 2005, a 160 GB hard drive in September 2005, and a 200 GB one in May 2006. The latter 2 both used perpendicular magnetic recording. Along with the 300 GB version, the company is also releasing a 250 GB hard drive in February too. The ultralight notebooks of the future will get tinier and tinier, but it doesn't mean laptop manufacturers will have to compromise on hard drive capacity.
