Au Revoir iBook? - Bonjour Macbook!I'll give you the bad news first. It seems Apple will no longer be pushing the iBook, a sterling laptop that has been serving the graphic art and desktop publishing community since it's unveiling at Macworld 1999. Before you start crying into your beverage of choice consider what Apple is offering instead for your portable computing delectation - the Macbook. We've already written about the Pro, the first Apple notebook equipped with Intel's Core Duo technology, 2 processors built into one chip. The Pro, with it's 17 inch widescreen display, and blazing 2.16 GHz processor is more of a desktop replacement machine. The new 5.2 pound Macbook with it's glossy 13.3 inch glossy widescreen display, and svelte form factor is a more affordable, portable Apple laptop. The Macbook comes with two color choices - black or white, and it also boasts a dual core processor courtesy of Intel (1,83 or 2 GHz), 2 GB of RAM, and 120 GB of hard drive capacity. Pro bells and whistles like the iSight camera and iLife software suite are also present. Using boot camp software you'll be able run a windows operating system on Macbook, as well as Mac OS X if you so desire. When you consider the minimalistic design, task versatility and price to feature ratio of the Macbook, there's no doubt in my mind that Apple have a massive seller on their hands here. The Pro's hefty price tag makes it more suited to high end web developers and graphic designers. An entry level Macbook however, will set you back just over a grand, so students and small business owners won't be priced out of the market. Mark my words, Macbook units will be flying off shelves faster than discount dinkelpops at SchnitzelFest 2006. By Todd Gold - Laptopical Wednesday, May 17, 2006 |
