Apple's Dream Laptop: MacBook Pro Unveiled

Image of Apple Macbook Pro
What has four times the speed of a PowerBook G4, eight times the graphics bandwidth, and an Intel dual-core engine? We'll give you a hint. Its mobile instant video conferencing capabilities are powered by iSight. And iLife allows you to access all of your multimedia files whenever you want, and even create some of your own. The i's have it-that is, they should have been a dead giveaway that we're talking about an Apple product here. But could it be the mythic MacBook Pro? The laptop that Applephiles have been daydreaming about seemingly forever? Nothing but.
The MacBook Pro is the first Mac notebook to run on the new Intel Core Duo, two processors built into one chip. Yonah technology brings to the table 2MB of Smart Cache, memory that can be shared between the two processors, along with up to 2.16 GHz.

What that means is the Pro will deliver faster, better, and bolder when it comes to 2D and 3D graphics, video editing, and music encoding. The fun doesn't stop there. MacBook Pro also packs frontside bus and 667MHz memory that's faster than any other Mac out there. And unlike any other Mac, the notebook has PCI Express, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, and a Serial ATA hard drive. Increased graphic capabilities on a brand known for graphics makes for irresistible potential.

To show off the results of your creative juices and MacBook's power, there's Front Row. With the Apple Remote, the application allows you to present your work, projects, and proposals to clients, friends, and bosses. Complement them with the videos, songs, photos, and other media stored in the Mac's now famous iLife suite of lifestyle applications (there's that i again).

One thing Laptopical found disappointing was the lack of a built in modem. What happens if a Macbook owner finds themselves on a business trip to Krakozhia in a one horse town a light year away from a hot spot? Also it looks like I can't use my new Mogo mouse because of Sir PC card slot not appearing in this film:( Come on Apple, you can do better than that :)

Bottom line though for this review is the MacBook Pro is good value when you consider its features. You can't ignore that this new Apple notebook comes stacked with hardware such as a 15.4-inch widescreen display (17 inch also available), up to 120GB of hard drive, a FireWire 400 port, built-in microphone and stereo speakers, slot-loading "SuperDrive," built-in AirPort Extreme (with 802.11g wireless), Bluetooth, and a Gigabit Ethernet.
