You know, which hardware,drivers, or notebook versions might give Linux fits. Now here's away to avoid linuxinstallation gremlins altogether-buy a Linux-based machineright off the shelf.
Figuratively speaking of course. You won't get your Linuxnotebook off the shelf, but in the mail, from a store calledLinuxCertified. This place was a pioneer in Linux education, butgot into the sell side of things in 2003. Now they sell refurbished and new laptops, the LC2000 Series, with your choice of Red HatProfessional, Debian, SUSE, Fedora, Xandros, or Sun JavaDesktop.

The real beauty of LC2000 Series linux laptopsis that they're ready out of the box. They generally areoptimized for whatever configuration you order up, so thatdrivers and the particular Linux kernel in question are in synch.Nothing needs to be loaded onto it, and (knock on wood) noconflicts occur right off the bat.

And generally speaking, the basic LinuxCertified model comeswith standard ports, hardware, and good stuff that you'd expectfrom a modern notebook. Withthe LC2210D model, you can pick from an Intel Celeron M (1.4 GHz)or Pentium M (1.6 GHz), with 512 MB to 1 GB of memory. The harddrive starts at 40 GB, but can be bumped up in 20 GB incrementsto 100. You also get a media card reader, 14-inch display,FireWire, USB, Ethernet and PCMCIA access points, a combo DVDplayer/CD read-write, and built-in wireless. No core duo fireworks, but the key is you're Windows free and plugged intothe Penguin, right?

Plus, at this very moment the LC2210D, which normally costs$1499 with the Pentium, was going for $1049 on sale ($879 withthe Celeron).

LinuxCertified got into the business years back providing Linuxclasses for geeky types who wanted to move to Linux from Unix. Asa bonus to their classes, LinuxCertified sent a free Linux-basedlaptop, actually a rebuilt IBM Thinkpad.Eventually, students came back asking for more laptops, this timewithout the classes.     That's a great news! Linux lovers will love to have linux preloaded PCs or notebooks. I think linuxcertified is doing a great job here to match the right hardwares, drivers, and notebooks for us. Cost is also pretty reasonable.

    I recently bought a LC2210DE laptop from Linux Certified. I think it is good value for price, especially for a user who does not have time/expertise to get drivers working.

    What's wrong with buying a usual laptop that isn't Linux Certified? A careful choice will be worth it, because there are SO MANY notebooks out there and I find it hard to believe that NONE of them could be made running Linux reliably.     However, the one think I've wondered, how good is the linux wifi support on most laptops? I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive laptop with wifi (either internally or by pcmcia card). This one seems a little expensive, but I've googled around a bit, and i can't find any site that has much info on wifi under linux. Anyone got any idea?
