Linux Deal in Full Gallop: The Gazelle Value

Gazelle Linux notebook
Laptopical is always on the hunt for a good value. Sure, we review our fair share of more expensive gaming and business notebooks, but most of all, we relish our role as the everyman's laptop blog Web site-dare say, we are the champion of the everyday notebook user, from the classroom to the boardroom!
Quick self-promotion aside, we have found one new laptop that offers a 14-inch display, high-def audio, four-in-one card reader and Ubuntu Linux-based operating system starting at $699, with the option to upgrade to a Intel Core 2 options for a little more green.

This discount notebook in question is called the Gazelle Value. It's a Linux laptop from a company out of Denver named System 76, which is dedicated to delivering Linux to everyday users.

Besides the Linux OS, the laptop comes loaded with Open Office 2.0 and open-source movie-playing, CD-burning, image-manipulating, instant-messaging and photo-collecting software, among others, along with Firefox and Thunderbird Web browser and e-mail program.

Besides being all about open source, the company also believes in something called "open hardware"-whereby its customers can know exactly what the heck is in their laptop, and can ask to have their laptop made better with different hardware. Sounds like common sense (but kinda scary that it could be a novel concept.

The notebook's name is yet another facet of this feel-good story. System 76 names all of its laptops after animals because they believe strongly in protecting endangered animals and the environment and are planning to team with conservation organizations to put their money where their mouths are.

If you're not buying into these principles that the System 76 is dishing out, then you can purchase either a one-, two-, or three-year limited product warranty on your Gazelle in case your investment in the Gazelle turns out to be the endangered. Visit System76.com for more details.
