We recently received word, confidential until a few hours ago, of Lenovo's official announcement for the W700ds mobile workstation. This laptop boasts some impressive features, none more unique than the innovative sliding secondary screen.

The W700ds is a modified version of the W700, engineered with a sliding second screen. The 10.6" screen literally slides out of the primary display. Lenovo has made the sliding process smooth and easy and building this feature in has only added millimeters to the thickness of the W700ds versus the original W700.

The W700ds will come with all the excellent features of the W700 like a built in digitizer and color calibrator, 72% gamut visibility (50% greater color intensity than average) Intel's quad-core or extreme processors, NVIDIA® Quadro FX mobile graphics, 8GB DDR3 RAM, dual hard drives in RAID configuration and up to 960GB HDD space with SSD options. That's not even mentioning the DVD burner, high speed UDMA compact flash reader, support for Dual Link DVI, Display Port, VGA, a 7-in-1 multicard reader, five USB ports, WiMAX, fingerprint reader, a smartcard reader and hard drives with full-disk encryption.

"Professional photographer, Phil Borges commented, 'The Lenovo ThinkPad W700 is the ultimate in portable workstations for photographers. The built in calibration and the ultra bright monitor make it possible for me to do work on the road that I would normally have to wait to do in the studio. The W700's two built-in hard drives make backing up photos while I'm on the road or in the studio a snap. Normally the process takes me a couple of hours, but with the W700 backup time is cut in half. Now the new ThinkPad W700ds takes it one step further with a second screen, allowing me to move all my working palets to the second screen and giving me more real estate on the main screen for photo editing.'"

It will also come with the W700's exorbitant price, starting at $3,663. That's not bad, considering the W700 starts near there without the extra screen. We'd heard this was coming out before, but now it's official, boys and girls.
