Campus Convenience: The Inspiron 700m

Dude, college students have it made. Besides the lax schedule of waking up at 11 a.m. and partying until 3 a.m., the dorm-room parties, and the freedom not to cut their hair or shave their legs for whole months at a time, college students also can get their padres to buy them a laptop for school. Man, talk about unfair. Sure, students say they need notebooks to write papers for courses and take notes during lectures, and wireless connectivity will help them e-mail their professors and keep in touch with their study groups. But who they kidding?!

Nevertheless, buying a laptop for school is a big deal. College students, whether they're actually doing work or loading their iPod, need a laptop that is light enough to lug around campus, but stacked with features like wireless access, fast speeds, and lots of battery life. One such model is the Dell Inspiron 700m.
The 700m isn't the highest powered laptop, but students can wait until they're on their future employer's dime to get a business notebook. The 700m is smallish ultraportable, with a crowded keyboard and a 12.1-inch LCD screen. It doesn't have much storage space with its 40GB hard drive, especially if kids have the typical ten-thousand-MP3 music collection. And the 700m's wireless, Centrino chipset (with either a Pentium M 725 or M 755) is an older variety. But that being said, it still can suit the needs of your typical student.

This Inspiron only weighs 4 pounds, so even a lithe cheerleader can haul this around on her shoulder. Or for some extra life (for five and half hours total), add another extra half pound worth of eight-cell batteries.

And, dude, you're getting a Dell with a modicum of ports and drives, including two USB ports, FireWire, SD slot, and S-Video port, and a DVD read-write drive. All in all, it's not a bad little package at about $1,199 direct, considering what a student will probably use it for (word processing, e-mailing, Web surfing, IMing). And if mom and dad are footing the bill, no college student can complain.
