A solid offering from the chaps at Hewlett Packard. The Compaq nx9420 boasts Intel's core 2 duo technology, and security features such as a biometric fingerprint sensor, an embedded TPM chip and an integrated smart card reader.

Hewlett Packard's Compaq NX9420The world ofbusiness notebooks is experiencing the old trickle-down effect. That's the economic theory, also known as "Voodoo Economics,"whereby wealth and opportunity are granted to the 1percenters-the already wealthy and already plugged-in set-withthe hope that one day some of the moolah and good fortune willtrickle down to the other 99 percent. The HP Compaq nx9420 suggeststhe trickle down works when it comes tolaptops.
Hewlett Packard's newnx9420 is a 17-inch business laptop that starts at onlythe low $1,000s. Sure, HP's nw9440 is the higher-end model in thefamily, but the Compaq nx9420 ain't nothing to sneezeat-especially for small business owners and independentconsultant types looking for power but also staring down the billfor said power.

Said power comes from your choice of either an Intel Core Duoprocessor-from the T2300 to the T2500-or the ultra-new Core 2 Duo (merom) processor. A typical configuration for the HP Compaqnx9420 can also come with a full Gig of DDR2 SDRAM. That comes inone stick, so upgrading is always on the table as an optionthanks to a second empty slot. When it comes to storage power, expect as much as 100 GB.

And like any good business notebook today, the HP Compaq nx9420 comes lock, stock, and barrel withsecurity. There's a biometric fingerprint reader, a TPM embeddedsecurity chip and an integrated smart card reader.

Depending on what processor you get, the 17 inch display will varybetween a BrightView glossy finish, or an anti-glare, mattefinish. For instance, the model with the T2500 processor comeswith the anti-glare, while the T2400 comes with theBrightView.

One thing to consider with the HP Compaq nx9420, however, is its mobility, or lack thereof. This attributeof upper-crust business laptops didn't quite trickle down to thisCompaq. Weighing in at about 7.4 pounds, consider this laptopmore deskbound than a frequent flier. If portability is your main requirement and you still want to buy HP, check out the nc6400
