Google Building Secret Reservoir of... Fun Facts?

Google has released, relatively quietly, an online database of statistics. Because it's Google you know it's easily searched, and even in its infancy we were able to pull some interesting gems. For example, a study in March 2009 by OTX showed that 33% of young people (12 - 24 year olds) globally (UK, US, Germany, India and Japan) are contactable at all times, even in their sleep. That's the kind of stuff that makes you go, "huh."

The weird thing about this internet stats page is that it's buried deep in the hierarchy of Google's UK site, even though the growing collection of stats contains data reaching beyond the UK. Currently it does seem a high percentage of the stats is related to that region, but the focus seems global. It's also interesting that the submission page, where anyone can submit their own statistic, is actually hosted off of google.com, lending weight to the suspicion that the UK site is something of a tucked away testing zone. In any case, it looks like it might be a fun and potentially quite useful resource if Google ever decides to publicize and expand it.

The facts are arranged so that you can search by subject, just type in a word like a regular google search, or just ask for a random fact. Here are a few fun facts we dug up pretty quickly searching for random facts.

In January 2009 in the UK, 30 million people - around 80% of Internet users - watched online videos. Comscore, March 2009

Over 30% of our leisure time is now spent online, according to a TNS survey in late 2008 across 16 countries. TNS, December 2008

36% of UK broadband users (aged 16-55) state they have both the TV and Internet on in the same room every day. On weekdays the time when TV and Internet multi-tasking is most likely to happen is around 8pm in the evening. TNS/YouTube Media & Audience Study (broadband users aged 16-55), December 2008

And because we just had to search for laptop...

Over 30% of respondents in a recent eMarket study for Japan, UK, Spain and US, agreed that the mobile phone is an extension of their PCs/Laptops. 4% felt it was a computer, while 22% felt their mobile device was both a phone and a computer.eMarketer, March 2009
