Sonoma Notebook: The Dell Inspiron 6000The future has arrived, and it has Dell stamped on it. The new Dell Inspiron 6000 is set to begin the laptop revolution come winter 2005. What makes it special is its Intel 915 GM system chipset and integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 900. The Inspiron 6000 is one of the first notebooks, Dell or otherwise, to feature this new technology.Known by tech gurus as the Sonoma chipset, the Intel 915 GM endows the Inspiron 6000 with more efficient energy usage, greater battery life expectancy, quicker functionality, and smoother video and audio during multimedia and gaming experiences. Tech aficionados will appreciate the 533 MHz front-side bus speed, increased DDR2 RAM, and added PCI Express that the Sonoma chipset provides. Compared to its predecessor, the Inspiron 5160, the Inspiron 6000 model dishes up more improvements than just the Sonoma chipset. To integrate and manage the latest digital media equipment, the laptop provides optional Bluetooth, 10/100 Ethernet, and Wi-Fi technology, as well as an IEEE 1394 port, four USB ports, FireWire, S-Video, and a Secure Digital memory card slot. For the layperson, these exotic names and acronyms mean one thing - the new Inspiron 6000 can easily access wireless Internet and communicate simply with digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs, and other handheld devices. The Dell Inspiron 6000 has an inspired look, too. It boasts more slender dimensions that its predecessor. For your viewing pleasure, the notebook unveils a 15.4-inch wide-screen display. Choose from a WXGA, UltraSharp WSXGA, or ultra UltraSharp WUXGA resolution. The keyboard on the Inspiron 6000 is also redesigned for more ease of use. You won't need to worry about your fingers being tied in knots by a crowded keyboard. Dell, however, still found the space to fit new backlit multimedia keys, which can help you search through your collection of digital music. Dell went with a white and silver chassis for the Inspiron 6000, but left it up to you to customize the computer's cover. The colors choices are four-fold: cherry burlwood, carbon fiber, Mediterranean blue, and charcoal leather. It's this flexibility, not just in appearance but in hardware as well, that makes the Inspiron 6000 the worthy successor in Dell's line of notebooks for home and small business users. Whether you just want to surf the Web or launch a desktop publishing biz, the Inspiron can cover you with three choices of processors, ranging from the 1.30GHz Intel Celeron to the 1.60 GHz Pentium. Hard drive options start at 30GB and top out at 80GB. And your multimedia and data storage needs can be met by the variety of available optical drives, such as DVD, writable CD/DVD, and a double-layer DVD burner. With a base price under $1000, all of these capabilities, and the Sonoma chipset, the Inspiron 6000 represents a cutting-edge laptop purchase. The benefits of this laptop will only increase in the future, too. Come February 2005, models will be available with discrete graphics, and in March, 100GB hard drives.
