There's no doubting the fact that Linux has become a global phenomenon as a desktop PC operating system. Now Mandriva, a leading European Linux publisher, has managed to convince Dell that its Tux operating system is ready for the sales arena. Their Linux Limited Edition 2005 OS comes pre-loaded on the Latitude 100L.

Mandriva, the number one European Linux publisher, has done it. The companyhas shown the world that it and its Linux-based operating systemare ready for the consumer market. The Mandriva Linux LimitedEdition 2005 operating system is now pre-loaded on the DellLatitude 100L.

Already available to students, the Latitude 100L is aWIFI-capable notebook, with hardware options ranging from 1.4 to1.7GHz processors (Intel Celeron or Pentium M), and 256 to 1280MB of RAM.

But more importantly for Linux lovers, the laptop comes loaded and raring to go with a Linux-based OS. That mightnot mean too much to computer nerds and corporate folks, who'vebeen familiar with the wonders of downloading Linux software. Butfolks indoctrinated in Windows, it would be complicated indeed tohave them transform a Windows-based system into a Linux-basedone. Without their own expertise in programming and IT-isms, oran office techie to lean on, consumers at home would rather throwout their laptop than change the operating system on it.

It's much simpler to just start with the Linux installed ontheir laptops by the OEM. That way, consumers can power up theDell 100L and immediately get familiarized with Linux. All oftheir basic hardware features will be set up. And tools andsoftware, such as the OpenOffice.org suite, will already beinstalled and useable. In other words, very little thinking onthe part of consumers will be required.

Instead, they get a high-power, open-source notebook that canaccomplish anything their Windows-system could-at a verycomparable and competitive price. The Mandriva Dell Latitude100L runs for about $940, or 759 Euros. Consumers won't even haveto think too much about saving money.
