Linux Friendly Dell Latitude 100L

Mandriva, the number one European Linux publisher, has done it. The company has shown the world that it and its Linux-based operating system are ready for the consumer market. The Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005 operating system is now pre-loaded on the Dell Latitude 100L.

Already available to students, the Latitude 100L is a WIFI-capable notebook, with hardware options ranging from 1.4 to 1.7GHz processors (Intel Celeron or Pentium M), and 256 to 1280 MB of RAM.

But more importantly for Linux lovers, the laptop comes loaded and raring to go with a Linux-based OS. That might not mean too much to computer nerds and corporate folks, who've been familiar with the wonders of downloading Linux software. But folks indoctrinated in Windows, it would be complicated indeed to have them transform a Windows-based system into a Linux-based one. Without their own expertise in programming and IT-isms, or an office techie to lean on, consumers at home would rather throw out their laptop than change the operating system on it.

It's much simpler to just start with the Linux installed on their laptops by the OEM. That way, consumers can power up the Dell 100L and immediately get familiarized with Linux. All of their basic hardware features will be set up. And tools and software, such as the OpenOffice.org suite, will already be installed and useable. In other words, very little thinking on the part of consumers will be required.

Instead, they get a high-power, open-source notebook that can accomplish anything their Windows-system could—at a very comparable and competitive price. The Mandriva Dell Latitude 100L runs for about $940, or 759 Euros. Consumers won't even have to think too much about saving money.
