A Weight Off Your Shoulders: Compaq nc6400

Compaq nc6400 notebook from HP
Perhaps the most remarkable facet of the new HP Compaq nc6400 laptop is its weight. With a 14.1-inch screen, it still only tips the scales at 4.6 pounds. That's a load off any frequent flyer's shoulder. Of course, the Compaq nc6400 has other facets that make it a solid notebook choice as well. But 4.6 pounds? There are some sandwiches that weigh more than 5 pounds. OK, I'll try to move on. Like many business-class laptops these days, the Compaq nc6400 comes with the Intel Core Duo process with 2-GHz.
The only problem here is that dual core power is a bit hampered by the standard amount of memory-only 512 MB. Of course, it's expandable up to 4 GB, but a little more to start with would be nice. And while we're on the topic of skimping, the hard drive only comes standard with 60 GB. Just keep reminding yourself that the thin and light Compaq nc6400 weighs only 4.6 pounds :)

In other areas, though, HP did not skimp, such as security. Hardware built in includes a fingerprint reader, a Smart Card reader, and an embedded TPM security chip. To manage all of these, HP has its ProtectTools software suite. All standard. For the really paranoid, you can get the display privacy filter for an additional $49, which prevents anybody but the user from viewing the screen.

With laptop security comes safety, and for safety there's the Mobile Data Protection System 3D. This is one of those systems that parks the hard drive disk anytime it senses a sudden jolt or vibration. Another redeeming quality is the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 gaming card, which is more than enough to handle any gaming and/or graphics work that a businessperson would be doing.

For wireless internet, the baseline is high too. You get a built-in EV-DO modem with the Compaq Nc6400, which means you can hook into the Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess network. The standard wireless is good to go too. International travelers will have to wait a few months before HP offers HSDPA standard connectivity.
