College Program for Freshman

Freshmen entering Indiana State University in the Fall of 2007 should definitely be well-prepared: along with the typical accoutrements and accessories every first-year student needs, for the first time, a college laptop will be among them. C. Jack Maynard, ISU's provost and vice president of academic affairs, expressed his pleasure at the new edict, which was largely supported and approved by the Student Government Association.

SGA President Hobart Scales said their leaders are definitely in favor of the university's proposal and also asserted his satisfaction with the plan's results, which only just concluded at the end of the summer after a year-long process of intense study and research.

Students, faculty, and administration were all involved in the evaluation of the program, which, by the time the actual requirement takes effect, will arrive at the university to the tune of approximately $1,000 or less, per notebook computer.

Indiana State's Office of Information Technology will work with the committee when implementation of the college laptop program begins to ensure a straight-ahead, flawless integration into the new student population.

This announcement propels ISU to the ranks of the country's "elite wireless campuses," including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Northern Michigan University, Clemson University, and the College of William and Mary - all of which have similar campaigns underway.

Indiana State University is already 98 percent wireless, and just within the last year, the school purchased a powerful computer "cluster" which is able to execute nearly 1 trillion operations per second.
