HP Battery Recall - 135,000 Batteries Affected?

Are you looking for news about Dell's battery recall?

I don't know about you but while I'm typing on my notebook, the only smell of burning should be from pan-fried chicken wafting in from the kitchen. However, it seems that a small percentage of HP laptop owners could have a more serious problem than a burnt out frying pan.

Hewlett Packard have recalled 135,000 laptop batteries, as it seems they are prone to overheating. In an official statement they say that they have received 16 complaints so far, with no injuries reported, but 4 cases of minor property damage. Is it me, or do you really want to know what that property "minor damage" was. A barely visible scorch mark on the carpet, or a conflaguration rivalling the intensity of "Towering Inferno"?

Ahem, but I digress...

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall by Hewlett-Packard of a range of HP Pavilion and HP/Compaq Presario and Evo laptop battery packs. The problem is occurring in the packs, where an internal short can cause the battery cells to overheat and melt, or burn the plastic casing, posing a fire hazard.

Ah thinking about it, maybe it was a carpet, or rug, related incident, this has really got me thinking now.

This isn't the first time a notebook manufacturer has had to issue a battery recall. Earlier in the year Apple had a problem with some of their lithium ion rechargeable batteries found in G4 Powerbooks.

On the positive side, it's good to see Hewlett Packard taking a proactive approach, by offering a free replacement battery to affected HP notebook, and Compaq Presario owners.
