Opinion - The 4100 Averatec

The 4100 Averatec is a thin and light notebook from one of the new brands on the block. Like RockDirect and Twinhead, Averatec is one of the lesser known manufacturers, however, they are anticipating 2005 sales figures to be in the region of 600 million dollars, so they must be shifting units.

The Averatec 4100 laptop weighs under 5 pounds (4.7), and has a 1 inch profile, granted not in the subnotebook/ultralight class, but it's certainly portable. One excellent feature of the 4100, is that it's ready for the 64 bit applications of the future. That's because a Turion heart beats beneath the 4100's svelte chassis. A number of famous laptop makers have also opted to install AMD Turion 64 processors in some of their laptops, including Acer, HP, so Averatec are certainly in good company.

So what else do you get for your hard earned farthings? A 13.3 inch widescreen display, an adequate 80GB of hard drive space, 512MB of RAM, a multi-format DVD burner, and an integrated 4-in-1 media reader. Ports on the 4100 Averatec include 3 USB 2.0 Ports, a Type II PCMCIA Slot, 10/100 LAN (Network) Port. The 4100 also comes pre-installed with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Hopefully you'll never need it, but the Averatec 4100 is backed up by a one-year limited warranty (six months for the battery) and toll-free tech support available 24/7.

If you're looking for a true ultraportable pygmy, you might want to check out Toshiba's Libretto, which tips the scales at 2.16 pounds, and has a tiny 7.2-inch screen. But if you're seeking a notebook with a wider display, yet still light enough to not cause you shin splints whilst on the road, the 4100 Averatec, with it's full sized keyboard, and 64 bit processor, is well worth an investigation.
