AT&T, Verizon Drop Ad Suits

'Tis the season to buy a smartphone, and AT&T and Verizon have been dueling aggressively over supremacy in more places than just their ads. Not sure who paid more in litigation fees (we're guessing AT&T), but it looks like both parties have decided to put away their guns for the time being.

It all began a few weeks ago, when AT&T became disgruntled over Verizon's portrayal of their 3G coverage in their "There's a map for that" commercials. They sued, and, losing in their bid to have Verizon's ads banned, responded with some ads featuring Luke Wilson from Old School (took us a while to remember where we'd seen him). It was only today that they officially threw out their suit, with Verizon throwing out an earlier suit as well.

From everything we've been reading in Consumer Reports and elsewhere, AT&T has been hit hard for sometimes choppy service, and yet iPhone buzz is still so high that people will cling to the provider just to have the phone. So it sort of looks like Verizon is right, AT&T's service isn't so great - but nobody cares because of how amazing the iPhone is. Hence, the veritable onslaught of Droid ads touting it as an iPhone killer.

With Verizon coming out ahead in said CR survey and winning this "mutual" victory by still being able to air their ads, things are looking good for big V... but they still don't have the iPhone. At least, not yet.
