The successor to the Eee PC 1000H, the 1000HE features improvements in the categories that matter to netbook users most: keyboard and battery life.

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE is one of the first netbooks to grab the new Intel Atom N280 chip. As we've grumbled before the literal speed increase is minuscule (1.66GHz vs 1.6GHz), but in addition to a boasted increase in graphical performance there should also be some power savings resulting in increased battery life. Throw in a higher capacity battery 6-cell battery, and you've got a netbook which Asus claims can hit 9.5 hours of battery life. That's with WiFi off of course, which will almost never be the case for any netbook user, but expecting 7-8 hours is not unreasonable.

The keyboard has also received some design upgrades. Most noticeable at first glance is the decision to go to a chiclet or pebble style keyboard layout. Most noticeable once you start typing things like your name or nearby state capitals, the right shift key has been repositioned so that it is now to the left of the up arrow, solving an issue that bugged many touch typists on the old 1000H.

The netbook should retail for around $399, but Asus is offering a $25 coupon for pre-orders.

Will ASUS honor warranty? After 3 months of gentle use, my screen turned into an abstract painting! The non-English speaking/e-mailing reps at ASUS say it is probably damage and will not honor warranty. I have had to ship it to them at my own cost to find out. More to come as to whether or not their warranty is any good!
