Apple Tablet To Be Paired With New Music Cocktail

Apple, which has revolutionized the music industry before, is said to be collaborating with top record label executives on a new effort which will (they hope) drive up sales of actual albums rather than just singles.

EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group have all teamed up with Apple on this new project. "Cocktail," as those close to the situation are calling it, is a collection of features such as a new interactive booklet, sleeve notes and other interactive features that will be bundled with the purchase of new albums. If done right, the new features will be compelling, interactive and original, enticing many to pay the extra bucks for a whole, high-margin album.

As one exec put it, "It’s not just a bunch of PDFs... There’s real engagement with the ancillary stuff."

The ex-hippy exec in the office was quoted as adding, "it’s all about re-creating the heyday of the album when you would sit around with your friends looking at the artwork, while you listened to the music."

Apple wants to add more features to the album material without making things harder for the consumer. There would be photos, liners and and lyric sheets to skim through, but you would be able to play the music directly from the booklet without having to click back out to iTunes. Album sales have been falling fast, and Apple's partners in this endeavor are hoping this can provide a much needed boost.

Cocktail could come as early as September. Apple's 10" tablet notebook is said to have iTouch-esque internet capabilities in WiFi with no 3G. There are also expectations that the tablet will be frequently used to watch movies and possibly even read books.

Does this excite people? Are you dreaming of being able to buy albums in a cool and convenient way like you once dreamed of buying singles? Do you even use iTunes? Do you dream at all?? Personally, I like the sound of a well designed full album played sequentially more than a bunch of singles on shuffle, but that still doesn't mean I'd pay $18.99 (note: I do not actually know what they plan on charging) for that plus a few pictures.
