Review - Alienware Area-51m 7700I return, exhausted from my trip to GerbilTech HQ in sunny Somerset UK, where I was reviewing prototype, eco-friendly - hamster-wheel powered laptops. Barely have I reached my desk, before our mug wielding editor, (Think Bill Lumbergh from "Office Space" without hair), intercepts me. Slurping coffee, he leans over my cubicle wall:".....Um.....Yeah.....I've got a laptop assignment for you, I'd like you to check out the Alienware Area-51m 7700.....Thanks.....Oh, oh and I almost forgot.....Um.....I'm also going to need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday too ok. We, ah, lost some people this week and, uh, we need to sort of play catch up......Thanks... " Alienware have been cranking out top-end computer gaming machines since the mid 90's, but I have to admit I've never managed to get my sweaty palms on one of their quality laptops.....Until now. Staring back up at me from my humble desk are a pair of glowing blue alien eyes, giving this notebook Godzilla a distinctive, almost intimidating design. The Area-51m 7700 behemoth of a chassis weighs almost 13 pounds. If you have arms like pipe cleaners, and couldn't punch your way out of bag of Kettle chips - it's time to look elsewhere. The Area-51m 7700 is essentially a desktop replacement, or "Mobile Desktop" as Alienware like to say. Underneath the hood throbs the latest Pentium 4 processor, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 ULTRA chip , ATI's Mobility RADEON X800 graphics module, and 1GB of 533MHz DDRII memory. I fired up Rome - Total War and was impressed with how smooth the game play was. The crisp 17in widescreen display, boasting ClearView's LCD tech, and four integrated Harman Kardon speakers with subwoofer also help to enhance the overall gaming experience. All this cutting edge computer tech and design comes at a price though. Indeed a top of the range Alienware Area 51m 7700 will set you back the best part of four grand, (around 2,200 uk pounds.) If you're a dedicated gamer with arms like Van Diesel, and money to burn, the Area-51m 7700 is an absolute winner. Penniless pip-squeaks (myself included) should dust off the bowflex, and start saving. More - Alienware.com |
