Since the turn of the year all the talk at Laptopical's watercooler has been of the blazing core duo "Yonah processor". Indeed a succession of quality notebooks have been released boasting Intel's finest including the Apple Macbook Pro, the Dell XPS M1710, and the Sony Vaio SZ1VP. Now AMD are keen to make up ground with the release of the 64 bit X2, a processor ideal for the imminent Windows Vista operating system.

AMD ismaking the move to leapfrog Intel in the processor world. The No.2 chipmaker has released a dual-core AMD Turion 64 X2, making itthe one and only company out there right now with a 64-bit dual-coreprocessor for the ultraportable notebook. AMD is alsoreleasing a 64-bit version of the AMD Sempronprocessor.

The 64-bitside of things is key to using the 64-bit Microsoft Windows Vistaoperating system, which Microsoft eventually will release astheir premiere replacement to Windows (and they swear they'llrelease it sometime!). It holds the promise of a future ofricher, quicker application, a world where computers are morefluid and pervasive part of our lives.

In fact, AMD has been working with Microsoft as closely aspossible to make sure that its 64-bit processors are compatiblewith the upcoming Vista operating system. The dual cores ofthe processor come in handy for users involved in massive mobilecomputing, who use graphics programs, wireless Internet, wordprocessor-all at once at unprecedented speeds and without suckingtheir battery dry.

The secrets to the success of the new AMD Turion allcome with big words. First, the new dual-core chips have"Multicore Power Management," meaning the two processors willknow how to work together to conserve battery power. Next, theAMD Turions have "Digital Media Express," for 3-D and 2-D imagerendering, and audio/video capabilities. And then there's"Virtualization," which means good things, especially security, when it comes to working in the virtual world.

Notebooks with the new AMD Turion 64 X2 should be hitting theshelves this spring and early summer. In business speak, that'sin the Q2. Some of the laptop manufacturers already lined up tohave the Turion inserted into their products include HP, Gateway,Acer, and Fujitsu.
