Ultravagabond Says: "No Laptops on Vacation!" |
![]() |
Unfortunately we've been reduced to a skeleton crew here
at Laptopical HQ. Todd Gold has signed himself up for a "Tiny
country" schnapps tasting tour of Europe, and Lucy has entered
herself into a clay pigeon shooting qualifier at an obscure
satellite tournament in Wigtownshire. Who can we blame for the
reckless insubordination of Laptopical's want-away employees?
Serial adventurer and author of the "4 Hour Workweek" Timothy
Ferriss - that's who! Tim has managed to extricate himself from the shackles of a 9-5 and travel the world, breakdancing in Taiwanese music videos, and shattering tango world records along the way. He is able to fund his extended adventures by running a multinational company from a multitude of wireless locations across the globe. In his book which is currently blazing up the Amazon top 100, he offers tips on how Joe Soaps can do the same. We asked Tim whether the portability of a laptop facilitated his ultravagabond lifestyle? He had this to say: |

I'm writing
this on my laptop from an airplane between SF and NYC, so it's
most appropriate. I find laptops to be both invaluable and
imprisoning, depending on how they're (mis)used. Notebooks are a
great excuse to withdraw from the world and live online, which I
think is often a socially-reinforced escape from engaging in real
life. Bringing a laptop on vacation is enjoyment suicide unless you have the self-discipline to keep it off -- most people don't, myself included. I only bring a laptop if I know I'll need to get some work done (don't try and catch up on work during vacation, as it defeats the purpose of that recovery period), and I have two machines that allow me to run the show from anywhere, whether an island in Panama or a café in Tokyo: 17" MacBook Pro for fun (for video editing and looking at pretty colors) Sony VAIO VGN-TXN27N with extended battery for business (intro'd to me by Drew Curtis of Fark.com. I tricked it out to get 13+ hours of life, it weighs less than most of my books, and it's the best hardware I've ever owned. Too bad it has to run on Vista!) - Long live the mobile lifestyle! So the Indiana Jones for the digital age wields two notebooks, an Apple Macbook Pro and an ultraportable Sony Vaio. However it seems they are only stowed with his bullwhip, and Cooper jacket on business trips not vacations.
