Timothy Ferriss's "4 Hour Workweek" is currently blazing up Amazon's best seller charts, and has been described as a manifesto for the mobile lifestyle. We asked Tim for his opinion on laptops, his reply is worth reading if you are considering taking your portable pal away with you on vacation.

Tim Ferriss's 4 Hour WorkweekUnfortunately we've been reduced to a skeleton crew hereat Laptopical HQ. Todd Gold has signed himself up for a "Tinycountry" schnapps tasting tour of Europe, and Lucy has enteredherself into a clay pigeon shooting qualifier at an obscuresatellite tournament in Wigtownshire. Who can we blame for thereckless insubordination of Laptopical's want-away employees?Serial adventurer and author of the "4 Hour Workweek" TimothyFerriss - that's who!

Tim has managed to extricate himself from the shackles of a 9-5and travel the world, breakdancing in Taiwanese music videos, andshattering tango world records along the way. He is able to fundhis extended adventures by running a multinational company from amultitude of wireless locations across the globe. In his bookwhich is currently blazing up the Amazon top 100, he offers tipson how Joe Soaps can do the same.

We asked Tim whether the portability of a laptop facilitated hisultravagabond lifestyle? He had this tosay:
I'm writingthis on my laptop from an airplane between SF and NYC, so it'smost appropriate. I find laptops to be both invaluable andimprisoning, depending on how they're (mis)used. Notebooks are agreat excuse to withdraw from the world and live online, which Ithink is often a socially-reinforced escape from engaging in reallife.

Bringing a laptop on vacation is enjoyment suicide unless youhave the self-discipline to keep it off -- most people don't,myself included. I only bring a laptop if I know I'll need to getsome work done (don't try and catch up on work during vacation,as it defeats the purpose of that recovery period), and I havetwo machines that allow me to run the show from anywhere, whetheran island in Panama or a café in Tokyo:

17" MacBook Pro for fun (for video editing and looking at prettycolors)

Sony VAIO VGN-TXN27N with extended battery for business (intro'dto me by Drew Curtis of Fark.com. I tricked it out to get 13+hours of life, it weighs less than most of my books, and it's thebest hardware I've ever owned. Too bad it has to run on Vista!) -Long live the mobile lifestyle!

So the Indiana Jones for the digital age wields two notebooks, anApple Macbook Pro and an ultraportable Sony Vaio. However it seems they are only stowed with his bullwhip, and Cooper jacketon business trips not vacations.
