Linspire 5 Inspires Linux Laptops?

Linspire released its latest operating system, Linspire 5, in March 2005 after a year of tinkering and more than 1,200 improvements. The new Linux-based system brings the company one step - or 1,200 steps - closer to its goal of competing in the operating system market.

The Linspire claim to fame is that it makes Linux accessible to even the most illiterate computer user. Well, maybe not the illiterate user, but businessmen, students, and other everyday users will appreciate Linspire 5's graphical interface, how-to tutorials, and familiar software.

The operating system includes the OpenOffice 1.1.3 suite, which is freeware-based but compatible with Office with a capital O. Music and photo managers can store users' digital files. And a Web browser, instant messenger, and e-mail client round out the Linux kernel 2.6.10 system.

Additional applications can be found at Linspire online. The firm's "click and run" (CNR) technology permits users to browse their extensive library of 2,000 Linux programs at the CNR warehouse and download with one click.

Business users will especially appreciate the system's built-in VPN security, password encryption "wallet," innate virus protection, and integrated firewall. For mobile users, the OS offers WiFi profiles and Centrino or PowerNow compatibility.

The Linspire is available this very moment for download at their site at http://www.linspire.com/os. (European consumers should go to http://www.linspire.eu.com) Coming soon, a boxed version will be available in stores near you. The software, including a year's worth of CNR service, comes to 69.95 Euros.
