A Ballad of Technological Innovation: The DSP Poet 6000Power Over Ethernet Computer

Power over Ethernet may soon be coming to a notebook near you. British company, DSP Design, have just released a PC that can receive electric power through a network cable. The Poet 6000, does not require a plug for a wall outlet, a technological innovation that could soon electrify the world of mobile computing.

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) may be coming to notebooks forthe first time. The UK-based firm DSP Design announced itsrelease of a computer that receives electric power through anetwork cable. Called the Poet 6000, the computer does notrequire a plug for a wall outlet.

Don't toss out your AC adapters just yet. At the moment, PoEprovides limited voltage (up to 15.4 watts), so that means that alaptop powered by PoE will provide limited capabilities. The Poet 6000eats up only 12 watts because it has a flat-panel, touch screeninstead of a monitor, along with low-power components.

That limits the use of the Poet 6000 to kiosks, conferences, andtrade shows - temporary setups where power cable installationwould be cost prohibitive or too time intensive.

Still, DSP is a pioneer in a technology that could electrify theIT world. PoE has been providing juice to Voip handsets,smart-card readers, Webcams, wireless access points, and other low-wattage devices. It works becauseelectricity travels through network cables - either in unusedwires or in the same lines as data.

The next step in this technology could be PoE Plus. With thisprototypical technology, the laptop would not be brought down tothe level of its power source. The power source would be elevatedto meet the needs of the laptop. Those in the know predict PoEPlus will pack 30 to 35 watts in everyday network cables.
