Sometimes data is the real target of a thief. Indeed a devious criminal, with access to personal files stored on your hard drive can leave you open to identity theft - wreaking havoc with your personal finances and credit rating. That's why a fingerprint reader, like the one found on the new Ultraportable Thinkpad X41, is a useful biometric layer of protection, deterring all but the most persistent of brigands.

At 2.7pounds, the new ultralight IBMThinkPad X41 can float like a feather, but it won't let userissues sting you like a bee. The new business-geared X41 is thelightest laptop in the IBM lineup to feature a built-infingerprint reader.

If you listen to the IT folks around the water cooler, you mayhear them going giddy over these so-called biometric features. Fingerprint readers free laptop users from passwordsand repetitive sign-ins. That equals fewer panic calls to thebusiness helpdesk, and that silence is music to the ears of anyIT staffer.

IBM also unveiled new Thinkpadsoftware that will reduce headaches for uses and IT pros alike. The application automatically checks for updates for a notebook'ssoftware and downloads drivers, BIOS upgrades, and other keyimprovements. The service and repair package is completed whencombined with Rescue and Recovery, the ThinkVantage tool thathelps systems recover from crashes.

IT geeks also fantasize about what's underneath the X41'schassis. It features the hottest mobile processing technology: anIntel Pentium M and Intel 915GM chipset with 400MHz front sidebus. The graphics card, an Intel Graphics media Accelerator 900,can get the heart racing.

The new ThinkPad is a stallion, too, that can last for hours on theroad. It features the ThinkPad Power Manager, a technology thatblesses users with control over their processor and fan speeds -two aspects of mobile computing that matter most to a battery'slife.

If users want to dock this notebook, they can use the X4UltraBase Dock. This expansion only adds slightly more than 1pound to the mix, but brings additional batteries, a CD or DVDoptical drive, and more room for data storage.
