Review - Toshiba Portege S100It's tricky finding the balance between portability and power, so hats off to Toshiba for trying to do that with the release of the Thin and Light Portege S100. Toshiba state that the S100 is the lightest laptop (4.38 pounds) they have ever manufactured to feature a 14.1 inch 1400 by 1050 display. As expected the build quality of this notebook is of the highest standard, sleek elegance and a subtle magnesium finish.Toshiba currently offers two configurations of the S100, one with a a 2-GHz Pentium M 760 processor ($1999.00), and one portege with a 1.73GHz processor ($1499.00). The top of the range S100 also comes with a 60GB hard drive, 512MB ram, battery life of up to 3 and a half hours, spill resistant keyboard, RGB monitor port, fast infrared port, 2 USB ports, RJ-45 ethernet port, secure digital card slot, and a PC card slot. Alas no bluetooth. While this laptop doesn't offer a biometric fingerprint reader like some of the Lifebook, Thinkpad and Compaq notebooks we've reviewed recently, it does feature a cable lock slot, and an optional TPM Security Chip. TPM provides an added level of security using data encryption, allowing you to save confidential info such as passwords securely. Toshiba have tried to please everybody, (and make a tidy profit in return) by offering desktop performance in a thin and light notebook. The danger is that doing this you fall short on both performance and mobility. There are lighter laptops than the S100, and there are more powerful ones, however when you look at the build quality of this notebook, you can clearly see that Toshiba have pulled out all the stops, and have not tried to cut any corners. The S100 is not a Gamer's box of delights, nor is it an ideal choice for a student laptop, but it makes a mature notebook selection for an executive needing the right mix of class, performance and portability.
